Michael S. Marks, President Michael Marks, President and co-founder of AEG, has 28 years of experience in the technical, management, and consulting aspects of the utility industry. Mr. Marks' specialties are in the areas of demand side management program (DSM) planning, design, implementation, evaluation and regulatory compliance, statistical analysis, load forecasting, strategic issues consulting, and comparative economic studies. Mr. Marks has managed multi-million dollar projects for gas and electric utilities throughout the United States. Mr. Marks has provided expert testimony for many gas and electric utilities on various DSM and load forecasting issues. Mr. Marks co-designed and co-managed the New York Power Authority’s High Efficiency Lighting Program, which provided hundreds of millions of dollars in lighting retrofits for all of NYPA’s downstate customers. Most recently, Mr. Marks has provided turnkey project management for Con Edison and the Long Island Power Authority on their direct load control programs using Carrier Corporations 2-way communication platform. Mr. Marks worked for two years in Bermuda as the manager for the electric company’s new Energy Services unit. He was retained as the sole consultant for a number of collaboratives including a Michigan Collaborative assigned to design and implement DSM programs for Detroit Edison, a collaborative in Kentucky in support of low income DSM program, and most recently a collaborative in Missouri to design a portfolio of DSM programs for Empire District. Mr. Marks is currently working with a number of utilities and cooperatives in Missouri and Kansas on their first ever design and implementation of DSM programs. Additionally, Mr. Marks has provided consulting services internationally for utilities in Canada, South Africa, Bermuda and Thailand. As President of AEG, Mr. Marks is responsible for the overall operations and financial management of the company. Mr. Marks began his career at American Electric Power and he has been with AEG since 1982. During his time at AEG, he has worked for over 100 gas and utility clients, including investor owned utilities, cooperatives, and municipals. Many of these clients have utilized his services for multiple projects on a long-term basis. These clients include Aquila, Kansas City Power & Light, The Long Island Power Authority, Energy East, Bermuda Electric Light Company, Keyspan, and Con Edison of New York. Mr. Marks holds a MA Degree in Applied Economics from Binghamton University and a BS Degree in Mathematical Economics from State University of New York at Oswego. Back To Top
Bruce Humenik, Senior Vice President Bruce Humenik has more than 35 years of multi-disciplined management experience in the electric and gas utility industry, including several executive positions in corporate planning, customer services, research and development, marketing, finance, and engineering. His expertise focuses on developing diversification strategies and marketing plans to meet the demands of the evolving energy industry, the analysis of complex business processes, and designing customer service strategies with practical implementation plans. He has provided key planning, technical and supervisory support for the development of energy service companies for several utilities and has testified in a broad range of regulatory proceedings. He is currently providing project management and technical consulting services to the Long Island Power Authority for several of their Clean Energy Initiative programs, with specific focus on the development of an Offshore Wind Park off of the south coast of Long Island. His project facilitation services for the wind initiative includes bid evaluations, project planning, scheduling, vendor negotiations, permitting support and outreach activities with agencies, other stakeholder groups and the general public. He has been involved with the wind industry for more than twenty years and has co-authored an EPRI utility sitting guide for wind turbine installations. He is also providing technical and management support to a number of Demand Side Management and Small Scale Renewable initiatives. Prior to joining AEG, Mr. Humenik held several Department Manager and Director positions at the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO). While Manager of Energy Services, Mr. Humenik established one of the most aggressive electric conservation service programs in the U.S. with budgets exceeding $40 million annually and total shareholder incentives approaching $100 million. His group had primary responsibility for all customer and vendor interface regarding energy efficiency issues. While in this assignment, he developed a centralized call center and implemented unique strategic plans for reengineering and restructuring LILCO's marketing initiatives to focus on energy efficient load growth and economic development opportunities. As Corporate Budget Director, he was responsible for the development, monitoring, and analysis of annual budgets totaling $2 billion and had overall responsibility for the design and operation of a new activity-based corporate financial controls system. In corporate planning, he had responsibility for the design of the transmission and distribution systems for Long Island. Joseph S. Lopes, Senior Vice President Joseph S. Lopes is a senior vice president and co-founder of AEG, with nearly 30 years of experience in serving the needs of the electric and gas utility industry, primarily through consulting, systems and database design and statistical analysis. He is a mathematician and statistician with an extensive background in load research, metering, design and evaluation of efficiency, demand-response and demand-side management (DSM) programs and regulatory issues. Mr. Lopes has specialized in the areas of systems design and development for sample design, data acquisition, survey analysis, financial analysis, comparative economic analysis, load analysis and end-use technology simulation modeling. Mr. Lopes’ most notable recent projects have included review and revitalization of load research programs for several electric and gas utility clients, project management of advanced metering and pricing pilot programs for multifamily, submetered and single family residential buildings, development of time-sensitive pricing and demand-response programs for residential multi-family buildings and impact analyses of demand response programs utilizing run-time data for large deployments for major utility clients. Mr. Lopes earned a Bachelor of Science degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Mathematics and Computer Science and additional courses in computer science. He has authored over 50 technical papers and presentations on the subjects of statistical sampling, load research, metering systems, demand response, demand-side management, innovative pricing studies, end-use load modeling, load data analysis and PC- based software systems. Robert D. Obeiter, Ph.D., Senior Vice President Dr. Obeiter has more than 25 years experience in energy and utility services and leads the strategic consulting and CIS practice groups at Applied Energy Group. In addition, he is Managing Director of Applied Capital Strategies, AEG's investment advisory division. Dr. Obeiter specializes in projects involving utility diversification, retail business planning, marketing strategy, new product development and strategic pricing. He has consulted with both utility and ESCO clients to define business strategies, determine measures to support strategies, and implement new product offerings. During Dr. Obeiter's career he has provided consulting services to over 30 utilities, including American Electric Power, Central and Southwest Utilities, Duke Power, CMS, Potomac Electric Power Company, Southern Company, New York State Electric and Gas, Long Island Lighting Company, Long Island Power Authority, Con Edison, New York Power Authority, Houston Light and Power and others. In addition, his client lists includes independent and affiliated energy services companies, technology solution providers and private equity and leveraged buy-out firms. Prior to joining AEG he was Executive Vice President of InSITE Services, an application service provider delivering billing and information services to utilities and other energy services companies. At InSITE he was responsible for strategy, business development, financing and marketing and sales functions. Prior to InSITE Dr. Obeiter was a Principal with both Barakat & Chamberlin and XENERGY, leading economic and management consulting firms. At both of these companies Dr. Obeiter focused on utility diversification, retail business planning, marketing strategy, new product development and implementation. Representative assignments included assisting utilities and energy service companies to define retail business strategies, determining how these strategies could be supported, and implementing new product offerings. He was also Director of Marketing, Director of Information Services, and Director of Rates at new England Electric System. Michael Ambrosio, Vice President Michael Ambrosio is a Vice President at Applied Energy Group, Inc. (AEG) with over 25 years of experience in all aspects of utility regulation. Mr. Ambrosio provides advisory services to government and private entities on matters related to competition in the electric and natural gas industries and programs that promote the installation of energy efficiency measures and renewable energy systems. Mr. Ambrosio is currently leading the team that provides a number of services that support the administration of New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program. Prior to joining AEG, Mr. Ambrosio established M Ambrosio and Associates providing advisory services to various clients in the energy industry. Mike also served as a Director in the Deloitte & Touche Utility Regulatory Consulting Group. At D&T he provided advice to a number of private and government entities, both U.S. and international, on issues related to the restructuring of energy markets. Mr. Ambrosio previously served as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities overseeing all aspects of utility regulation where he directed the preparation of policy recommendations for consideration by the Governor and BPU Commissioners on issues concerning the regulation and restructuring of utility markets. Mr. Ambrosio was the principal author of the State’s 1995 Energy Master and is well versed in all aspects of utility regulation including ratemaking and rate design, alternative forms of regulation, service quality standards and regulatory policy. Mr. Ambrosio earned a Masters of Science degree in energy policy from Antioch University West and a Bachelors of Science degree in electrical engineering from Rutgers College of Engineering. Jack P. Cusack, Vice President Mr. Cusack joined Applied Energy Group, Inc. (AEG) in December 2000 after 30 years of extensive experience in the electric and gas utility industry. Prior to joining AEG in the current position as Vice President, he assisted AEG in several “Change Management” and “Customer Service” engagements. His expertise focuses on the critical assessment of customer service operations, service-related process reengineering, customer call center design and implementation, and Supply Chain Process reengineering. He has directed and conducted major projects for KeySpan Energy, formally the Long Island Lighting Company, in Supply Chain reengineering and more specifically in warehousing operations and processes. At the Long Island Lighting Company he led a team that successfully restructured a Customer Relations organization of over one thousand people. That project had a $17 million budget, and included the design, development, and implementation of a call center. He has also partnered with Deloitte & Touche, LLP, (D&T) in their utility reengineering consulting practice and, with a D&T Partner, prepared and presented a paper “Reinventing the Utility” to the Strategic Solutions Management Conference. He managed the reengineering of the Procurement organization for the Bermuda Electric Light Company. He is also leading the AEG project team that has been selected by the Utility Purchasing Management Group to conduct their Supply Chain Benchmarking Survey for its members. Most recently, he is leading the process reengineering effort as part of the Long Island Power Authority’s initiative to implement a new Customer relationship Management (CRM) system for their Electric Sales and Marketing organization. Prior to joining AEG, Mr. Cusack held several high-level management positions in the Information Systems, Customer Relations, and Purchasing and Warehousing organizations at KeySpan Energy. His responsibilities included: Manager of Customer Relations/Special Services, Manager of Warehousing and Distribution, and Senior Consultant Corporate Reengineering. Mr. Cusack holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management and Communications from Adelphi University, and has completed the Leadership Development Program at the University of Maryland. Back To Top
Timothy Maslak, Vice President Mr. Maslak is a Vice President of Consulting Services and Information Technology at AEG and has been with the company since 1993. He has an extensive background in quantitative and qualitative analysis, statistics, application development, networking, energy auditing, conservation and DSM program design and development and conservation analysis. His responsibilities at AEG have included impact and process evaluation, billing analysis, market research, SAS programming, database development and analysis, DOS and Windows application programming, internet initiatives, web site development and network administration. Mr. Maslak is responsible for all of AEG's computer systems as well as its network design and implementation, BBS and website design and maintenance. He also assisted in the design, development, and programming of a comprehensive computerized refund and call center system for Kentucky Utilities and has experience with Visual Foxpro, Visual Basic, and many web design packages and languages. As part of this refund system consulting project, Mr. Maslak designed the computer network for the Customer Call Center. Mr. Maslak has also designed, installed and maintained a Novell network for Pinnacle Financial Group, and provides ongoing software and hardware support for that client. He has provided database review and restructuring guidance in a variety of significant multi-program DSM evaluations, metering programs and marketing initiatives. Mr. Maslak was a staff auditor with BESCO, Bermuda Electric Light Company, Ltd.'s Energy Services Company, and has conducted extensive residential, small commercial and large commercial audits on many of BELCO's largest customers. Additionally, he has produced energy master plans for these facilities, pin-pointing inefficient equipment and providing recommendations for energy-efficient retrofits, acquired contractor and manufacturing bids and negotiated pricing, and provided strategies for future projects. He has performed energy audits including metering-device installations and data analysis for Rochester Gas and Electric, Boston Edison Company, and Northeast Utilities, and provided a variety of services for, but not limited to, New York Power Authority, Long Island Lighting Company, Aquila, Con Edison, Atlanta Gas Light Company, Detroit Edison and Public Service Colorado. Mr. Maslak has organized energy technologies trade shows and has led the acquisition of trade allies from the principal industries (manufacturing, contracting, and engineering firms) for utilities and Energy Services companies. Mr. Maslak leads the development of Internet-based Value-Added solutions for the Utility Industry in the deregulated marketplace. He has led the design and implementation of multiple and complex custom web-enabled workflow management systems for Con Edison, Long Island Power Authority, Aquila Energy, Kansas City Power and Light, Keyspan Energy, and Freeport Electric. He has managed the implementation of a comprehensive marketing data warehouse for Keyspan Energy and Long Island Power Authority and has been engaged by these companies to assist in the implementation of an enterprise wide, best-of-breed Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system (Siebel CRM). Mr. Maslak led the development of a web-based Environmental Study website for Long Island Power Authority that is being used to assist in the permitting process for the LIPA Offshore Wind Farm. Mr. Maslak has provided M&A due diligence services as they relate to IT and infrastructure, and provided strategic visioning services for utility executives as they pertain to corporate-wide standards, enterprise information management and SOA, CRM/CIS, outsourcing, etc. Mr. Maslak lead the development and continued operation of ISO New England’s ODR Settlement System, and is currently developing a statewide Program Coordination system for the State of New Jersey BPU that will be used to manage all of the DSM initiatives across all utilities, Energy Service Companies and supporting agencies. Mr. Maslak has developed curriculums, training programs, system and user guides, and provided train-the-trainer and/or end-user training for Association of Energy Services Professionals, Long Island Power Authority, KeySpan Energy, Aquila, ISO New England and others. Mr. Maslak has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo and is currently enrolled in Master’s study in Management Engineering at L.I. University at C.W. Post. He has completed coursework in Novell Network System Administration, SAS Programming and Reporting, HTML and PERL programming, and is a member of The Project Management Institute, The Association of Energy Engineers, and Association of Energy Services Professionals. Ralph Nigro, Vice President Ralph Nigro is a mechanical engineer with over 26 years of experience in the energy industry. His background includes a broad range of technology and management experience including renewable energy, distributed generation, conventional electric generation, energy efficiency, and their associated policy and regulatory issues. After joining Applied Energy Group, Inc. (AEG) in 1995, he initiated the company’s growing consulting practice in renewable and distributed generation technologies. Ralph works with a variety of clients from the industrial, utility, and government sectors to provide consulting and management services. He has successfully developed, led and managed numerous R&D programs, renewable energy and distributed generation implementation projects, energy efficiency programs, advanced technology evaluation studies, and new technology market research on behalf of those clients. He has also provided in-depth technical and policy development support to the State of Delaware and other government clients related to energy efficiency and new energy technologies. Ralph also has extensive practical experience in utility operations and business processes, electricity supply and end-use technologies, energy auditing, and equipment performance analysis. This experience is augmented by many years of project economic and technical analysis. Prior to joining AEG, Mr. Nigro worked for 15 years at the Delmarva Power & Light Company in Wilmington, Delaware. His experience at Delmarva included over ten years in the design, construction, and start up of generation projects and plant upgrades. Ralph has provided technical support and training to many of his clients on renewable energy, power generation, energy efficiency, and project economics. He also teaches a graduate level course on electricity policy and planning at the University of Delaware. Ralph is a 26-year member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and is a Registered Professional Engineer. Ralph graduated from the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware in 1980 with Bachelors’ Degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Liberal Arts. In 1996, he graduated from the University of Delaware’s Graduate College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy with a Master of Arts Degree in Energy and Environmental Policy. Back To Top
Jodi A. Marks, Assistant Vice President Ms. Marks is an Assistant Vice President for Applied Energy Group, Inc. and has performed numerous consulting assignments since 1990. She has extensive experience in project management; DSM process and impact evaluations, call center start-up and management; market research; database design, development, and analysis; energy service company startup and operations; process mapping; report preparation; and website design. Ms. Marks’ professional experience includes the coordination, program management, database analysis and market research for DSM impact and process evaluation projects for several client utilities including: Con Edison, The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), Aquila, El Paso Electric Company, Deloitte & Touche, LLP, Bermuda Electric Light Company, Rochester Gas & Electric Co., New York State Gas & Electric Corporation, Northeast Utilities and Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation. She has also performed market research and program evaluation analysis for Atlanta Gas Light, New York Power Authority, Detroit Edison, Public Service Electric & Gas Company and Central Hudson. She has managed all aspects of market research including survey instrument design, survey implementation, database development, coordination of data entry tasks, database tabulation analysis and interpretation of data, and production of written reports. Additionally, Ms. Marks has performed process interviews for program managers, program staff, key customers and associated vendors for many client utilities and has performed onsite energy audits for residential customers. Ms. Marks designed and developed the customer service Information Call Centers for several direct load control programs including LIPA and Con Edison. Additionally, she trained the customer service staff for these programs. Currently, she is the program manager for the Con Edison DLC program and manages both the Con Edison and LIPAedge Call Centers for both residential and commercial central air conditioning programs. Susan K. Nathan, Assistant Vice President Susan Nathan brings 25 years of experience in the gas and electric utility sectors in all areas of marketing and management, design and implementation, product management, training and contract administration. Her main focus areas are in the design, implementation and support of demand-side management programs including oversight of regulatory approval processes, marketing, contractor selection and evaluation. Ms. Nathan also has extensive experience with operations support, strategic planning, customer and community relations. She is skilled in managing projects with large budgets and multi-faceted professional staff. Prior to joining AEG, Ms. Nathan served as Manager of Product Marketing for Kansas City Power and Light and led a team of 15 professionals in all facets of marketing company products and services and in the design, execution and evaluation of 12 energy efficiency and demand response programs. She led a collaborative based advisory group and testified in a variety of rate proceedings. She also served as Director of Retail Operations and Consumer Markets for Aquila Networks. Her responsibilities included strategic and annual planning, technical sales support, training, contract administration, policies and procedures and development of specialized customer relationship management software. Ms. Nathan began her utility career with CenterPoint Energy Minnegasco as Manager of Demand Side Management Programs, directing that company’s $7 million DSM program efforts. Ms. Nathan holds an MBA from St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota and a BA with a concentration in Business Management from Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis. Back To Top
Kenneth S. Maslak, Director Of Systems Development Mr. Maslak is the Director of Systems Development at AEG. He has an extensive background in application development, workflow management, database administration, internet technology, systems integration and computer networking. He has seven years of systems development experience with an extensive background in application programming, networking, consulting, and project management. Mr. Maslak has provided consulting services to many companies in systems analysis, system development, technology and vendor identification, specification and implementation, ASP development, and identification and technical analysis of licensed and ASP CIS alternatives. His systems consulting experience extends to internet initiatives, website development, application programming (including custom workflow management systems for two of the largest utilities in New York state), and network administration, for clients that include Trans Union, Barnes & Noble, Rafferty Energy Group, Mirasol Energy, Con Edison, Long Island Power Authority, Freeport Electric, Utilicorp United (now Aquila Energy), Kansas City Power and Light, and Keyspan Energy. He manages the hosting of multiple internet-based back-office applications for both municipal and investor-owned utilities. Mr. Maslak was the lead system architect for theEnergyEdge.com B a website focusing on the delivery of value-adding internet-based products and services to the electric and gas utility industries. He is responsible for the management, integration, and security of all of AEG's computer-based systems. Mr. Maslak was a lead developer on multiple comprehensive online work management systems for municipal utilities to large investor-owned Utilities. These systems handle internal and multiple-partner work flow management and reporting. Joseph J. Rocco, Jr., CEM, CLEP, Director Joseph Rocco is the Director of Energy Services at Applied Energy Group. Mr. Rocco joined AEG in 1991 after having spent several years in the architectural field. His background includes technical consulting for the electric and gas utilities, architectural design, construction management, energy auditing, and measurement and verification services He is certified as an Energy Manager [CEM] and Lighting Efficiency Professional [CLEP] from the Association of Energy Engineers. Mr. Rocco's professional experience has included work for each of the major utilities in New York State, as well as a number of other utilities throughout the country. For the past 5 years he has been working for the Long Island Power Authority’s Commercial Construction Program. As the Assistant Program Manager, his responsibilities include working with architects and engineers to develop energy efficient projects that meet LIPA’s program guidelines, and, recently, work with LEED Green Buildings. Additionally, Mr. Rocco has performed Demand Side Management [DSM] evaluations of residential, commercial, and industrial programs for Long Island Lighting Company, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, and Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation. Additional evaluations have been performed for other utilities such as Atlanta Gas Light Company, and Detroit Edison. He has also assisted several utilities in filing conservation plans with local public service commissions including Aquila, Kansas City Power & Light, and Empire Electric. In addition to performing DSM evaluations, Mr. Rocco's expertise covers energy auditing and inspection from the perspective of both evaluation and implementation. He has performed hundreds of residential, commercial, and industrial audits in order to verify installation and savings persistence of energy efficient technologies. More recently, audits have been conducted as a research tool used in the assessment of potential energy savings for commercial and industrial sectors in the service territories of The Village of Freeport (NY) Municipal Light and Power Department, Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO), and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). He has developed recommendations for energy efficiency improvements across all end uses for more than $2 million worth of improvements to several facilities as part of his involvement in BELCO's Energy Service Company (BESCO). Mr. Rocco's success in completing such projects stems from his technical understanding of lighting systems design & operation, HVAC, and electric motors and drives, as well as several other end-uses. Mr. Rocco earned a Master of Architecture degree from Tulane University. He has attended professional development workshops and conferences on energy efficient technologies and equipment, including the ASHRAE Professional Development Seminar on Standard 90.1 (Energy Efficient Design of New Buildings), Energy Efficient Office Technology, Multifamily Building Ventilation Systems, and several State and Federal Code compliance seminars. Mr. Rocco is also a graduate of the Dale Carnegie School of Human Relations and a member of the local chapters of the AIA, ASHRAE, USGBC and IESNA. Back To Top
Jerold Rowan, Executive Consultant Jerry Rowan has 35 years of extensive experience in the gas and electric utility industry, including leadership positions in supply chain management, business process reengineering, facilities and fleet management, and human resources. His focus in the supply chain arena has been on organizational integration, strategic sourcing, electronic procurement, spend analysis, implementing key performance metrics, inventory reduction and warehouse network optimization. Prior to joining AEG, Mr. Rowan held several Director level positions in the electric and gas utility industry. As Director of Purchasing & Materials Management, he was responsible for corporate-wide purchasing, contract negotiation, materials management, warehouse operations, in-bound logistics and supply chain information technology. This included setting the strategic direction for the organization and policy development, an operating budget of over $15 million, annual non-fuels purchases of $850 million, an inventory investment of $45 million, and operations in three states. He has managed the fast-track implementation and integration of several major systems that were critical to positioning companies to meet the challenges of their highly competitive business environments. Two such engagements included the implementation of Oracle Financials ERP which provided a common platform to support the supply chain process, and he led the implementation of PeopleSoft HRIS/Payroll to provide a common platform for a company that was created through the merger of two major utilities. Mr. Rowan holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from St. Francis College and has completed the Public Utility Executive Program at the University of Michigan as well as the Human Resources Management Program at The Pennsylvania State University.
